Would you like to visit
with our local birds? A garden with feeders and
water attracts a seasonally changing variety. Chaparral residents, such
as the
California Thrasher and the entertaining Roadrunner, either come to the
feeders
or are easily found, while migrants come and go during the year. With
luck
more unusual species will drop by, such as Lawrence's Goldfinches or
Lazuli
Buntings. Anna's Hummingbirds are year round residents, and it is not
unusual to
see four species of hummers at their feeders competing with the Hooded
Orioles. Chats and Blue Grosbeaks have nested here for several years.
Least Terns
have surprised us by coming in to feed on the pond.
Our tropical cherry and bottle brush trees are almost magical attractors
for
fruit and seed eaters, as well as for warblers. The mulberry fruiting
season
brings in Western Tanagers, Phainopelas and Cedar Waxwings.
Because it is on the Pacific Flyway, San Diego County has the largest
number
of bird species of any U.S. county. Birding locations abound, both close
to
the farm and within easy driving distance.
